Municipality of Skagway 2040 Master Plan

Client: Municipality of Skagway
Location: Skagway, Alaska

In anticipation of the Municipality of Skagway’s waterfront lease nearing its 55-year term, BA crafted both a 20-year master plan and an operational strategy to optimally manage the waterfront moving forward. Through community and stakeholder outreach, including workshops with city leaders and thorough site visits and infrastructure evaluations, BA outlined a path for future ownership, operations, and development of the waterfront. The plan outlined upgrades and
restoration of docks and adjacent uplands to support the expanding needs of cruise, small boat harbor, cargo, mining, and commercial ventures benefiting the Skagway and Yukon communities. It also focused on improving not only access to the water’s edge to connect the downtown core with the port area but also infrastructure such as
roads, sidewalks, sewer, water, and energy systems, to accommodate the surge of cruise visitors during peak summer months.

The final plan, supported by Skagway residents, is designed to sustain diversified economic activities in an environmentally sound manner, addressing the needs of both users and stakeholders. Moreover, it sets forth a strategic action plan, propelling the Municipality of Skagway towards its long-term goals and objectives.
