White Plains Library

White Plains Library Foundation and White Plains DPW / White Plains, New York.

Client: White Plains Library Foundation and White Plains DPW
Location: White Plains, New York.
Size of Project: 30,000-sf
Construction Cost: $3.5M
Completion date: 2018
Unique Features: BA created several themed solutions within the larger open plan of this library to provide recognizable “neighborhoods” for different patrons.  Along with this, creative flex-use space was imagined to support teaching, media arts and technology spaces and a gaming cove with operable walls to allow reconfiguration for different events.

BA was engaged to master plan all public areas of the library and bring new programmatic uses to underutilized areas while expanding areas that provided key services to the community. After consulting with community members, children and teens, the library’s administrative staff and political leaders, BA develop a master plan that included a new teen center “The Edge”, a new adult area “The Hub”, a new café with an adjoining multipurpose space, a traditional long table, small clusters of seating spaces sprinkled throughout the library and along the perimeter windows countertop seating with unrestricted views to the exterior. The library needed to remain open while work was performed, thus a phasing plan was implemented that called for the relocation of books and shelving, administrative offices, and the temporary closing of the main entrance.

With the success of the re-programming of the ground floor of the White Plains Public Library, BA was engaged to remodel the second floor of the library’s auditorium meeting room and gallery. The new program called for the refurbishment of the existing gallery and meeting rooms as well as the transformation of the existing auditorium into a new close circuit TV studio for the City of White Plains during the daytime hours while still maintaining auditorium use for nighttime events. The gallery was redesigned with LED lighting providing a near natural sunlight quality to the space, while portions of the ceiling surface will be blacked out thus creating a contrast between light and dark, low, and high within the gallery space. The meeting rooms were refreshed with new acoustical ceiling tiles, wall finishes, LED lighting and flat screens.
