Centereach Public Library

Middle Country Public Library / Centereach, New York.

Client: Middle Country Public Library
Location: Centereach, New York.
Size of Project: 750-sf alteration and 1,300-sf addition
Construction Cost: $1,958,000
Completion date: 2013 Phase 1
Unique Features: BA introduced technology advancements to allow for automated sorting of library materials, self-check and drop by library patrons.

BA’s scope includes architectural design, construction documentation, and construction administration services for the selective demolition and construction alterations of existing components within the Centereach Public Library. These modifications support the introduction of RFID collection sorting machines and related equipment adjacent to the main circulation support office and the building’s exterior. The RFID collection processing system was implemented to improve staff efficiencies and to facilitate improved accessibility for library users with special needs.

All design work conforms to the Americans with Disabilities Act. BA’s design team proposed two small new building additions to support the required alterations, as well as limited site work involving planting, hardscaping, demolition and construction to allow for a vehicular access book drop directly into the sorting machine at the library building’s façade. The library procured a 7-bin, RFID automated sorting machine with two public-feed induction stations (expandable to 3) and one staff-feed conduction station, located within the existing circulation support office near the main library entry.
