Unique Features: BA’s creative solution extends technology first introduced by BA in the main branch of this library system to automate sorting of materials and allow self-service check-out and return by Patrons. Additionally, BA used playful themes, shapes and materials in the new Children’s Reading Room and Activities Area to attract wonder and creativity.
BA’s design team was tasked with providing a planning and programming study, as well as preparing conceptual alternatives, for the renovation of the Selden Public Library to serve current and future patrons in an optimal operating environment. This redesign was the second renovation that the library has undergone. The original building was built in 1986 and underwent its first renovation in 1999 with the assistance of a different design team.
With this 2018 building renovation, the design team addressed not only the programmatic concerns of the client but also maintained and respected the eclectic approach of the first building renovation. BA’s building renovation and its expansion continue with the characteristic attention to materiality, industrial forms, and spatial organization.
