40-story Shoma One Towers at Douglas Road Metrorail Station

Bermello Ajamil & Partners (BA) designed Shoma One – a composition of two 40-story residential towers located between Douglas Road, Bird Road and US1. The Metrorail and Underline parallels the site along US1 with Douglas Metrorail Station within walking distance for ease of rapid transit. The design of Shoma One features clean structural lines on the façade framed by the gentle curved structural lines along the sides of the building that rise to hold the crowns providing both elegance and simplicity to the primary elevations. The towers, crowned with a metal ring, landmark the intersections of both Douglas Road and US1 and Bird Road and US1 respectively. The illuminated rings at the tower crowns, reinforcing the elements of classical skyscraper design, while highlighting the building’s unique articulation. These rings will benchmark the project by day and will provide light beacons that will benchmark the project by night. The building style is impressed with unifying undertones of masonry and earth tone colors and pays close attention to detailing and patterns from the 1920s to the 1940s reflected primarily on the railings and metal screening featured throughout the project facade.
With more than 1 million square feet of construction, Shoma One will also be host to The Shoma Bazaar, an upscale eatery that will be located on the ground floor and second floor facing Bird Road. The Shoma Bazaar, totaling 18,000-sf of commercial program, will transform the corner of Bird Road and US1 with lighting, outdoor eating at courtyard and plaza and an provide indoor venue that will provide focus and activity to this primary intersection.
Design attention was given to the cladding of the parking garage. The façade incorporates a three-dimensional perforated panels system that visually reduces the multilevel parking garage while providing a visually appealing skin to the supporting parking program of the building. Due to the small perforations, these panels will accent and animate the pedestal both in the day and at night.
The residential towers, totaling 723 dwelling units, will be supported by a motor drive that introduces the resident to each respective tower lobby and parking. Internalizing the motor court on site also mitigates servicing the project while not adding congestion to the already busy intersections. The ground floor provides a business center, dog care zone and dog park. The expansive amenity level hosts the Pool, Fitness, Great Room and Social Lounge, Media room and Kid zones including indoor and outdoor play.
The elevation pays close attention to the two designated amenity levels on level 11 and 12. These levels are considered the belt of the building dividing the pedestal and the residential towers with a continual glass façade that wraps each tower, respectively. Here, once more the play of day and night will feature these two levels that along with the amenity deck will create a private oasis for the project.
The strive in designing this project was to create a feeling for Miami that promoted the warmth that is instilled in traditional architecture via detailing and materials and at the same time achieve a project that celebrates how we live today and now providing a platform for all the activities that support a modern lifestyle.
In conclusion, our design mission was the following: “First we design a feeling for Miami, then, build it.”
